Tel Aviv

Background

Tel Aviv-Yafo usually referred to as Tel Aviv, is the second most populous city in Israel, with a population of 384,600. Tel Aviv is located on Israel's Mediterranean coastline over an area covering 51.8 km². It is the main city of the largest and most populous metropolitan area in Israel, Gush Dan (Dan Bloc), whose population numbers 3.15 million as of 2007. Tel Aviv is recognized as a strong candidate global city, and has been named the most expensive Middle Eastern city to live in.

Sites and attractions in Tel Aviv

Jaffa the old city - Old Jaffa is one of the most attractive places to tour in Tel Aviv-Jaffa. The city which has always been the entry to the ancient land of Israel is succeeding, even today, its traditional aromas and fragrances which have always characterized it: beautiful stone buildings, narrow, winding alleys, a fishermen’s port, artists’ quarter, caf?s s, restaurants and shops. In Jaffa there are ancient churches, which are among the most beautiful in Israel, serving the city’s Christian community, with open doors for visitors and the faithful.

Neve Tzedek
- The Neve Tzedek neighborhood of Tel Aviv was the first Jewish neighborhood to be built outside of Jaffa at the beginning of 1887, 22 years before the establishment of the City of Tel Aviv. With the passing of the years, Neve Tzedek has become a center of taste, culture and lifestyle and a desirable area to live in. Many intellectuals and artists chose to dwell and to create here. A tour of the narrow lanes and winding streets of the neighborhood is a fabulous experience. The area has been renovated and each corner is a gem. Amongst others, you can find here the house of the Hebrew Nobel Literature prizewinning author, Shai Agnon, who lived here from 1909 to 1912. At the corner of Pines and Lilienblum Streets is a building colored pink and yellow, which served as the first cinema in Tel Aviv.

The streets of Tel Aviv

Dizengoff Street , which was once considered the most prestigious area of the city and still preserves much of its former glamour with a variety of fashion stores, and many places to sit with a mug of coffee or a glass of beer.

Basel Street
in the north of Tel Aviv is a focus point of slightly different social activity, with caf? s and restaurants, where the "Northeners" spend their time. (This is the code in the Israeli culture for "Yuppies" and lovers of the good life).

Sheinkin Street in Israeli culture is much more than just a street name. The old, dilapidated street changed in the last few years, when many youngsters moved to live here. Sheinkin is the street of modernization, of entertainment and enjoyment; It's possible to find there numerous interesting stores and the best known caf? s and restaurants in Tel Aviv. Sheinkin Street has become more establishment and today adapts itself to all tastes. The modernization and the freshness has moved a little south to the Florentin Neighborhood, which reminds us of Sheinkin at the beginning.

Nachmani and Montefiore Streets
The meeting between these two small streets, brought with it exclusive ambience and magic - little caf?s s peap from every corner, also bistros and number of recommended restaurants. Most of the buildings in this area have been preserved since 1910 and some have been renovated, adding a special beauty to the area.

Rothschild Boulevard
A shady, tree lined boulevard, where history sprouts from every nook. This boulevard was, in the past, the main first street in the city and the majority of the buildings here are from the beginning of last century. Here it is possible to find the first street light to be placed in the city and also the first kiosk. Nowadays, the beautiful boulevard is one of the main hubs of entertainment of the city. On Fridays, in the summer season, there are street parties, giving the whole area a cheerful, vibrant character.

Tel Aviv Port
- In recent times, the historical Tel Aviv Port is undergoing a process of rejuvenation and is opening its gates to the general public.
Like other historical ports, this port serves as a home to different free time, cultural, shopping, tastings and other activities, while preserving the authenticity of the site and conserving its historical story.
You are invited to visit the Port and enjoy quality, relaxed entertainment, at a reasonable cost, in a special atmosphere of a junction between the city and the sea.
The port also hosts varying activities like: exhibitions, street theater shows, creative workshops and experience, artistic performances and more.

Azrieli Center
- The highest observatory in the Middle East (located on the the 49th floor of the Round Building at Azrieli Center), it's possible to see the coastline that stretches from Ashkelon in the south, to Hadera in the north. Special telescopes and personal audio guidance are at the service of the public and this would not be possible without the souvenirs store and a good restaurant. Undoubtedly, this is an essential site for visitors to Tel Aviv-Jaffa who want to get to know the city and enjoy a heart stopping view. On the third floor of the Azrieli Mall is the ‘Total Tel Aviv Experience’ - a three-dimensional film of the first days of the city. Recommended.

Markets -

the Carmel Market is situated “behind” Allenby Street and offers mainly various kinds of foods, but also clothing and household goods.

The Nachlat Benyamin Pedestrian Mall operates between 10:00 and 17:00 on Tuesdays and Fridays, there is an excellent bazaar with art goods, different articles, souvenirs and gifts, street theater acts, musicians, conjurers and coffee and palm fortune tellers - all these “inconsequential” things that make life interesting.

The Flea Market is situated in Jaffa, offers almost everything, from second hand clothes and shoes, to antiques, household goods and furniture. Inside the market, you can even find a coffee house.
The Food Market of Dizengoff Center - Every Thursday afternoon and Friday morning, scores of stands offering ethnic foods of all kinds and from all communities. Recommended to arrive hungry!

Bezalel Market - situated in Bezalel Street, leading off King George Street, offers clothing and shoes from leading companies, at bargain prices.

Hatikva Market is situated in the Hatikva neighborhood, offers a variety of food products and household goods.

A happening of creative artists, who market their works in Dizengoff Street, in the area between Frishman Street and Dizengoff Circle.
The fair takes place all the year round, on Mondays, between 12:00 and 20:00, and on Fridays, between 09:00 and 16:00.
The fair encompasses artists, presenting works at fair prices, in a wide range of fields: works in wood, glass, ceramics, jewelry, drawings, a variety of sculpture, metals, special greeting cards, mystica and functional art, from Israel.

Antiques and Second Hand Fair
Visiting the Antiques Fair in Dizengoff is an experience similar to being abroad, for a few enjoyable and moving hours.
The fair takes place on Tuesdays, between 14:00 and 22:00, and on Fridays, between 08:00 and 17:00.
The market is spectacular in its beauty and its character, and in it can be found rare antique collections and individual items, such as; objects of Judaica, pictures, old hand tools, musical instruments, rare books, house ware, toys, rare collections, and apparatus for film and theater directors.
